Getting started

What Lawned is and how to create your first account.

What is Lawned?

Lawned is a New Zealand marketplace that connects homeowners with local lawn and garden contractors. You map your property once, post jobs with clear scope, compare offers, and pay only after you approve completed work. See how it works for the full four-step journey.

How do I start as a client?

Create a client account, add your property, draw service zones on the map, then post a job with services, timing, and a starting budget. Local contractors can respond with offers you compare in your Home.

How do I start as a contractor?

Create a contractor account, set up your profile and workzone, then finish Stripe payout checks (and NZBN verification if you are a company or partnership) before you can quote on paid jobs. After that, browse open jobs with mapped scope from your contractor dashboard. You can accept a client's budget or send your own offer in-platform.

Can I manage more than one property?

Yes. Your client dashboard supports multiple properties, each with its own zones, notes, icons, and service history.

Can I edit my zones later?

Yes. Open your dashboard, choose the property, and use property & zones to adjust boundaries, names, and map details anytime.

Orders & offers

Posting jobs, comparing quotes, and what happens when you accept.

How do I post a job?

From your Book flow, select a saved property, choose services and timing, set a starting budget, and publish the job. Nothing is booked until you accept an offer. Track finished work in History.

Can contractors counter my budget?

Yes. Contractors can send counter-offers. You can accept, reject, or counter back from the bid inbox in your Home or dashboard.

What happens when I accept an offer?

The job is assigned to that contractor, a secure card hold is placed for the agreed price, and you can track progress from your client dashboard. See pricing for how holds and capture work.

Is a contractor assigned automatically?

No. Lawned does not auto-match crews. A contractor is only assigned when you explicitly accept their offer.

Can I save orders for quick re-use?

Yes. Book again from a property on Home, or reopen a finished job from History when you want to repeat a past setup.

What happens when I remove a property?

The property permanently leaves your property and booking lists, and its slot becomes available. Unfinished orders are cancelled, while previous jobs remain in History with their address, status, and payment record. Property zones and setup photos are no longer shown. If a job is active, removal is blocked until that job is resolved. When in doubt, contact support with your property label.

Maps, zones & instructions

How property detail helps everyone agree on scope before work starts.

Why do I need to map my property?

Mapped zones give contractors the same visual scope you see — lawns, edges, hedges, and access notes — so quotes align with real work areas instead of guesswork from the street.

Do zones support custom names and colours?

Yes. Name each zone and assign colours so contractors can clearly identify the exact area to service. Set this up under property & zones.

Can I add property icons like hose or pet areas?

Yes. You can place icons for access and safety context, then add optional notes and media instructions in the same property setup flow.

What are off-limits zones used for?

Off-limits zones mark restricted or dangerous areas. They are excluded from order selection and visible for contractor safety. Trust & safety explains how we think about on-site risk.

Can I upload photos and notes per zone or icon?

Yes. After saving property setup, use the instructions flow to attach images and short notes to each zone or icon — still under property & zones.

Payments, approval & disputes

Holds, capture after approval, and the Resolution Center.

How does payment work on Lawned?

When you accept an offer, Lawned places a secure card hold for the accepted job price plus the booking fee. After the contractor completes the job and submits evidence, you review the outcome. Payment captures only when you approve — or after the review window shown in the product if you take no action. Details are on pricing.

What is the booking fee?

The booking fee is paid by the client at checkout and estimates card processing on the accepted job price: 2.9% plus NZD 0.30, GST-inclusive. For example, a NZD 35.00 job has a NZD 1.32 booking fee, so the client total is NZD 36.32. See pricing for the full breakdown.

What is the platform fee?

The platform fee is deducted from the contractor payout, not added on top of the client checkout total. Lawned deducts 10% of the accepted job price plus GST on that fee when payment is captured through Stripe Connect. See pricing for the current breakdown.

How do I know the job was completed correctly?

Jobs support completion evidence and tracking context so you can verify work against mapped zones. Trust & safety covers how we approach verification and disputes.

How do I dispute a job before payment is released?

After the contractor submits completion, the job enters a review window shown in the app. Open it from your client dashboard, check the evidence against your mapped scope, then choose Dispute instead of approving if the outcome does not match what was agreed. Payment stays on hold while the dispute is open. You and your contractor can work through the case in the Resolution Center.

Can I report a problem after payment has been released?

Yes. The review timer is not a deadline for raising problems. If you notice an issue after payment, open the job and choose Report a problem. A case is opened in the Resolution Center, your contractor is notified, and you can negotiate an outcome. Lawned does not override your statutory rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act.

When is payment released?

Payment auto-releases after the review window shown in the product if you have not approved or disputed completion. Read how pricing and capture work for the hold-then-capture overview.

Can I book the same work again?

Yes. Use Reorder this order from the Home to prefill the same property, zones, services, and budget as a new one-off request.

For contractors

Finding work, quoting, payouts, and disputes.

Does it cost anything to list my services?

There is no listing fee to join Lawned or appear in your workzone. Platform fees apply only when jobs are completed and paid through the marketplace: 10% of the accepted job price plus GST on that fee. See pricing and for contractors.

How are contractors verified?

Lawned does not collect passports or driver licences. Every contractor must complete Stripe Connect identity checks before quoting, accepting work, or receiving payouts. Companies and partnerships must also verify their own NZBN — franchisees use the franchisee entity, not the parent brand. Sole traders are cleared through Stripe. Creating an account is not the same as being cleared to transact. See trust & safety and the Terms of Service.

How do I find jobs that match my area?

Use your contractor dashboard to review open orders aligned with your service areas, then place offers using the client's mapped scope and notes.

Can I negotiate price with the client?

Yes. You can accept the client's budget or send a counter-offer in-platform so scope and agreed price stay clear — see pricing for how offers relate to holds and capture.

What should I base my offer on?

Use the map, selected services per zone, access constraints, and any photos or instructions the client added. How it works describes what clients see on their side.

When do payouts happen?

Payouts follow the platform completion flow after the client approves completed work and capture settles per the agreed terms. You must finish Stripe Connect onboarding first — payouts only go to the connected Stripe account that passed identity checks. Details sit with pricing and contractor support if you need a specific case checked.

How do I handle a client dispute?

If a client opens a dispute, automatic payout is paused until the case is resolved. Open your Resolution Center to see open disputes, review details, respond in the app, and work through any proposed resolution. Use support with your job reference if you need help on a specific dispute.
